Be absolutely infallible

The message, in a nutshell, is "agree or be shut down".

Arguably, however, the message is more insidious than that.

It's also a little bit more complicated. But then, that is our shortcoming. We're too eager to paint one side, broadly, as a villain, and the other as a hero. But then, that is convenient. With so many things going on, so many things to juggle, who has the time to sit down and think? Or, who has the motivation to sit down and think, especially now that thinking is, for all intents and purposes, frowned upon? For every one person looking to unpick a complicated web, there's three, maybe five, who has arrived at a conclusion and will hold firmly to it no matter what. And that doesn't apply to every situation.

The message, in a nutshell, is not "agree or be shut down". Lessons have been learned from the past, and anybody who's willing to subvert those will have to tread a little more cleanly. People are watching. So, now, you don't necessarily have to agree - but you have to be infallible. You have to be absolutely infallible. If you're to say that this thing is wrong, or that thing is wrong, then you better be sure, you better be absolutely sure, that you are infallible. Having just one speck of dirt on your surface would invalidate everything you say. How dare you.

So, you better be sure you're not squatting illegally on some land.

You better be sure you're not from a rich family that's stepped on the small guy.

You better be sure you're not influenced by some shifty entity from outside these shores.

You better not have any skeletons on your closet. Not even what may look like skeletons from afar. You better not be crazy. You better not be a flirt. You better not be savvy, savvier, when it comes to money. Be absolutely infallible, because otherwise, there is only one person who is, and that is backed up by a trumped-up majority and an army of defenders.

But, of course, if you're on the right side of history, there's no problem. It's all right. You'll be protected. You'll be favored, even. You can disagree, but remember to know your place. Always know your place. If you choose to stand up and go another way, you better be sure you're absolutely infallible. Otherwise, you're going down, even with just one strand. And it's easy. People will make up their minds quickly these days, and will not budge no matter what. They have no time to think. They have no motivation to discern. All they want is to see change their way.

The message, in a nutshell, is not "agree or be shut down". It's more insidious than that. The message, in a nutshell, is "if you disagree, be more perfect".

Supposedly, the truth is, nobody else is but him.

And your responses...
