Ducking

I've been watching way too many videos about the Apple Vision Pro.

Not that I want one. I don't think I'd really want one, even if I had use for one, which I don't. But it's useful to know these things for you'll never know when you'll have to write about it.

Yes, AR/VR headsets have been around for a while - and I think I saw an Oculus Quest on sale a few mall trips ago - but Apple does have a thing for releasing something that will open a lot of people's minds about a particular technology. We may not all want a headset, but we'll have a better understand of what it can do. I mean, "it's not just a gamer thing." It might mean a wider acceptance of such hardware in fulfilling various tasks at warehouses, for instance. Imagine being able to see how much of a certain item is available in real time, without having to whip up a device for it. Well, you're already wearing the device, so there's that.

Lost amidst all that talk were all the other announcements from Apple. Not much, really. They've finished moving all their devices to their own processors, for one. They've also announced the usual upgrades to all the operating systems, although as an iPhone X owner, I am out of luck: I am not getting the new iOS.

I mean, I knew I was getting to that point. My phone is, what, five years old? It's a miracle it's still working well, old battery aside. When I saw the new features they were announcing I just knew my phone isn't built for it. I don't have an always-on display, for instance. That's reserved for my mom's and my brother's phone. And I don't think it's practical to get a new phone just because, although I feel a dilemma coming: I know I have to get a new phone or a new laptop soon, and I hope one holds out for long enough.

There's one feature that I hope to have, though. They're changing the autocorrect function, integrating machine learning so it can better guess what I have to say.

As someone who doesn't exclusively speak English - and uses a phone that doesn't know Filipino - autocorrect failing to guess what you have to say is big enough of a hurdle. And I've been using this for five years. But even then, there are times when it doesn't quite know what I'm saying in English. Or maybe it's because my phone thinks highly of itself. I can't talk about "an apple" without my phone changing it to "an Apple". Or, even, the word "may" - "you may pass", for example, becomes "you May pass". I am not fond of a particular month, mind you.

Of course, what the new feature can do is understand not just that you're saying "apple" or "may", but "fucking" instead of "ducking". I won't get that until I get a new phone. This is the fate I have to embrace. Ducking hell, this obsolescence thing.

And your responses...
