Sugar-free (now you're sugar-free)

Now that Tim Hortons has pretty much disappeared in the Philippines, my preferred easy-to-get iced coffee is now Dunkin's. Easier to get, actually, since there are two branches within walking distance of my flat.

This morning, I got iced coffee on my way to the La Salle campus. (Yes, I am writing this from my old university, albeit in a building I have only been to one other time as a student.) I saw that Dunkin' now offers a "lite" option with sugar-free sweetener. It's weird on paper to have to add 35 bucks for that option, since you are getting rid of sugar for something else - I mean, I know why, that's why I did say it's "on paper".

Anyway, I decided to try that "lite" option, but I ended up saying I wanted my iced coffee with "zero sugar". I should've known something was up when I wasn't charged extra for it.

Turns out, I got myself the usual iced coffee, but with no sweetener at all.

And I think I like it.

There's a quip going round about how you know you're old when you start appreciating black coffee. I don't prefer it - the palpitations can be too much, I feel - but I can drink it. But one thing I have long realized is that I may be okay with coffee with no sugar, but there should be some milk in it. Or I can have no milk, but with sugar. But for the purposes of this piece, coffee with some milk.

I remember my second trip to Malaysia, the one where I did not even set foot on Kuala Lumpur, spending half a week instead in the suburb of Puchong. My hosts once brought me out to coffee. There was an Old Town coffee shop near my hotel, and for some reason I ended up ordering their coffee plain. I really loved it. Not sure if it has milk, but it does taste more mellow, because that's how Ipoh white coffee works. So, turns out, I've long been into that.

Maybe I can have my iced coffee from Dunkin' without sugar in the future.

And then I realize, my doctor is actually asking me to reduce dairy in my diet...

And your responses...
